Cirque Table
Cirque Table
34.5” tall 30” wide x 25” deep, dyed birch plywood, poured and cast epoxy, steel threaded rod, metal spring
The Cirque Table answers “yes” to 3 questions I asked myself:
Can I make a table using threaded rod as connectors?
Can I use cast epoxy balls as feet on a table?
How would it look if I put a fun little thingamabob on top of a table?
I love experimenting with different media and mixing them all up together. This is such a fun table! It was fun to make and it’s fun to live with. It can hug the corner of a sofa or the corner of a room. I poured epoxy on the horizontal surfaces so if you put plants on it, you don’t need worry about water damaging the wood.
For this table, I cast epoxy balls in 3 sizes. The yellow epoxy ball on top was cast with the end of the spring inside it so it will boing forever. I cast more yellow balls in that same size and then cast them inside of the clear epoxy balls that act as the feet. I also cast a few random small light blue balls and popped them inside one of the feet just to see what that would look like.
I happen to have a bunch of steel threaded rod in my shop, left over from some other project. Since it’s impossible for me to throw anything away, I threw it into the design of this table. The resulting industrial feel of the Cirque Table is very nice. It has fun. It has grit. It has moxie.
The shortest leg is 18” tall and sports a 12” diameter round top. The next highest leg is 22” tall and has a 10” diameter round top. The tallest leg is 26” to the round top and is 16” diameter. The protruding threaded rod with turquoise circles and spring-mounted ball add another 8” or so of height in the middle. The vertical surfaces are finished with Monocoat, a linseed-oil based finish.
The Cirque Table is one of 3 small tables I made from a single sheet of plywood. In 2022, I was one of 20+ artists invited by the Arvada Center in Arvada, CO to create artwork from a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood. Each artist got their own sheet of birch plywood and the resulting artwork was fascinatingly all over the place, stylistically. Cirque Table, Orchid Table, and Cricket Table came from my piece of plywood. The Arvada Center provided the plywood and some of the interior laminations appear to be black. I’m not sure what kind of wood is in there, but it results in very dramatic patterning of the tapered legs.
